About
Diabetic foot problems are a common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus, with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) being a serious complication.
People with diabetes are more prone to foot problems due to:
Damage to the nerves (neuropathy). This affects sensation to the feet, so pain is not felt and irritation may go unnoticed.
These changes in sensation alter the way people with diabetes carry weight on their feet and calluses may form. These increase the risk of skin breakdown
Diabetes can cause poor circulation in the feet, making ulcers more likely to form when the skin is damaged. This may also make the ulcers slower to heal.
Treatment
Convacare clinics will aim to:
- Optimize the local wound environment to facilitate wound healing.
- Make use of orthotics and appropriate dressings to offload pressure from the affected area to facilitate wound healing.
- Work synergistically with the multi- disciplinary team to manage the wound/patient holistically.
We will educate you on general foot guidelines to prevent re-ulceration.
